As a Puppy Walker, the statistics for our dogs making it is only 50%; Guiding is a hard job, and the dogs need to be mentally and physically able to handle the challenges that will be presented to them. So I am always prepared for the worst, and hope for the best!
While I feel Midnight is a great dog, very confident and willing to please, you never know....so until she graduates, I always wonder, what I would do if she WAS career changed.
I just adopted Texas, so that would bring my pet count up to 3, plus a guide dog puppy.....
Then add everyday things such as, school and work into the mix....as well as finding a place for them when we traveled....its not cheap. Unless I just (once again) work at ANOTHER doggie daycare/kennel. Which might not work since GDF is very hard to get to spay/neuter one of the dogs...and that is always an issue with daycare's.
Wow, it would defiantly be a lot of work...but as of now I don't have to make that decision, so we'lll just put it on the back burner for now.
In the meantime ....
We made a mistake; Texas is NOT a standard dachsund! He's a minature!!
It says it right there on his vet records, but I guess I was focused on the fact, that I wanted to "matching" dogs, that I kind of just overlooked that as a mistake.
I forgot that his previous owners BROUGHT him to the hospital and filled out the forms BEFORE leaving him.
Silly me.

December 10: Its been......
3 weeks and 2 days since Midnight departed; I miss her a lot....I miss puppy raising!
I have to keep reminding myself that Texas cannot go into the stores with me! LoL.
March or April cannot come soon enough. In the meantime...I'm working on Midnight's scrapbook, which I know will get sorely neglected as soon as I'm back in school.
I'm still trying to decide whether or not this is how it was arranged in my head...but oh well :D

Dear Friends and Pup Pals
I am sorry to inform you that our Mom has been feeling under the weather and can't post today.

Thanks for understanding
She didn't have anything important to say anyways.

December 8: Tex
Hi Guys,
Not too much going on around here, Mom keeps saying something about a move; I don't know what that is, but there is a LOT going on around here. She is going somewhere to sign up for school on Thursday, and I have to stay here and board at her job. How mean is that?!? I know I'm not going to have any fun. :(((
Anyway, she tried to find some out about her fourth guide dog puppy, but all she knows is that she is the 4th on the waiting list.
She is supposed to be raising a smooth coat collie puppy. Why does she need another puppy when she has me!?
Meanie.
I do love my big sister Bubbles, she is the awesomest sister EVER!! Me and her play a lot which surprises Mom cause she didn't think Bubbles would do much with me. We showed her didn't we Bubs!?
Anyways, Its waaay late, and mom is getting tired of holding me while she types. Oops while III type.
TTYL
XOXO

December 7: Dog Pause Bowls
Hey Guys,
Lately I have been talking a lot about dog food, and which foods are healthier then others; but what I haven't talked about is WHAT we feed our dogs out of.
Most of us have the standard dog bowl, looks sort of like this:
If you are like me, your dogs can clear this bowl in just 45 seconds flat; (and that's not an actual count) So far, I haven't had a puppy that didn't dig into their food, and choke and gag as they were vacuuming their bowls; Sometimes I would put plastic toys, or large rocks in their bowls to get them to slow down some and chew.
While they would work somewhat, it wasn't at all convenient.
Apparently I was not the only one who wanted a solution to this problem and they have graciously allowed me to try out one of their new bowls:

What They Say:
The DogPause dog bowl works to slow down the pace of eating and aid with portion control in the following ways:
What I say:
I was very eager to try the bowl, and was hoping that Midnight would be able to try it out; but alas she is gone, and I only have my dachshunds.
BUT Texas is a huge food fan, and gulps down his food as fast as his little mouth can go. With DogPause, I will admit to being surprised to see him stop and chew his food while eating out of this bowl! Its defiantly a lot easier then putting toys or other objects in his bowls!
I even took this bowl to work with me, and tried it out with some of our fast eaters there! It was good to see them stop and chew their food; although they still cleaned it out pretty fast!
It can hold about three cups comfortably, and maybe four if you carefully pour it over the top.
It can also double as a food and water bowl for smaller dogs. Since Texas is only eating a 1/4 c. per meal, it can fit in two portions, and water can go in the other portions; which also allows me to monitor his water intake. But heres a tip: Never give a Texas puppy a 1/2 cup of water before bed. Its quite messy. LOL!
Defiantly a bowl I would recommend and can't wait to use on my guide dog puppies;

Apparently I was not the only one who wanted a solution to this problem and they have graciously allowed me to try out one of their new bowls:
What They Say:
- Dog Pause has integrated portion control - each "feeding zone" is 1/2 cup, so its easier to measure food and ensure against accidental over-feeding. This helps with managing obesity risk and the vets really love this aspect of the bowl.
- Dog Pause bowls come in two colors and just one size. Works with dogs from 15-150 lbs.
- And the price is quite affordable at only $12.95
The DogPause dog bowl works to slow down the pace of eating and aid with portion control in the following ways:
- Divides the bowl into 4 feeding zones
- Each feeding zone is 1/2 cup in capacity and designed to "block" the dog from putting his full snout into the bowl; this slows down eating pace as your dog needs to use his tongue for each bite
- After your dog finishes each zone, he must re-position himself for the next zone
- The bowl is designed to slide a little on the floor, further slowing down the dog as he needs to re-position for each bite

December 6: Photos
Sometimes the best photos are purely by accident. Cause for the life of me I haven't been able to get this dog to be still!! This is why you should always carry your camera with you; even if its big and bulky, and you keep accidentally whacking dogs when you bend down with it. GRIN!

December 4: My Dachshunds
My dachshunds are very special; but somethings are their own, and other things are a breed trait....how is your doxie?
When are you with us; this is what you need expect. LOL!
Its funny to me how these two are such alike, my labs were as different as night and day, with some similarities.....(color, weight, toy likes,) but in others way very different. Midnight was calm and Rei was/is hyper; Midnight was content just to know I was in the building, Rei had to be with me at all times; Midnight started out not chewing and gradually worked her way up, Rei started out chewing and gradually slowed down. Midnight walked great on leash; Rei had to go through many collars and work before learning that skill. Midnight was eager to please, Rei could really careless what you thought. The list goes on and on.
Anyways, I finally found a store that sold the food I was looking for! YAY!!!!!!!!
So Texas will start getting Wellness mixed in his old food tomorrow! :-D
Also a big shout out to our friends Addie and Zoe!!!! We love our card and treats!
Texas went under the bed to eat his :D But we coaxed him out for his second one. :D
{Yummy!}
- My dachshunds are very noisy
- My dachshunds do not like to be without a Human
- My dachshunds tend to play with each other, and occasionally other dogs
- My dachshunds are VERY smart
- My dachshunds LOVE food
- My dachshunds looove car rides
- My dachshunds LOVE to cuddle in my lap

December 3: Dog Food Part 2 and Carry Alls
Having a pet dog is a lot more fun then I realized it could be! This is not to say that Bubbles has not been a pet, but she is an older dog, and I wasn't able to drive/buy things for her when she was younger; so I'm having fun now.
But I miss puppy raising, and being able to take my dogs in the store with me! I have to keep reminding myself that Texas cannot go inside places with me!!
I have decided to try Wellness dog foods with Green Beans and Carrots tossed in for some healthy fillers. After checking out which stores carried this brand, after work yesterday, Bubbles, Texas and I set out to check out prices, and variety.
Our first stop was Blaze N Skyy located in our downtown area. I knew the street on which it was said to be located, but had yet to see the actual building for it. So I parked on street over, leashed up the dogs, and we started walking.
Texas is still learning to walk on a leash, and had to stop and sit frequently, or dash ahead yelling at people walking by. I could just see Bubbles just rolling her eyes. Once we made to the shoppe there was a Pomeranian in the window, barking at us; I didn't see any "Pets Welcome" sign so I hurried on past.
I went back to my car, loaded the dogs up and drove back to the business; unfortunately they were out of Wellness Healthy Weight, which I"m looking to put Bubbles on; and no puppy food either. *sad face*
But I did find something very interesting.
As a puppy walker, I have to carry a lot of things with me, because we are constantly going and doing. Midnight was 9 weeks old when she first came to my college classes, which meant I was carrying toys, food and water bowls, food for mid-day meal, extra collars (Gentle Leaders, Martingale, and a whole host of others), pick up bags, extra leashes, Camera, paper towels, Tie-Down, treats...the list goes on and on. As well as my backpack, laptop and Purse.
Why so much? Well lets just say, its better to be prepared then un-prepared.
It was ridiculous, and I have been on the search for a bag, that could hold ALL of my things (minus the school books) until today.
Introducing the Everything But the Dog Carry All Bag.
While I'm still debating on whether or not I'll keep it (it was none too cheap); it is very roomy!
It comes with two collapsible bowls, a freezer pack and a huge indoor/outdoor blanket. (now if only I could refold it!!).
Some parts of the bag design I think could use improvement, over all it is a great bag. It has eight DEEP and ROOMY pockets, and its zipper is open ended so you are trying to shove things further down in the bag to close it!
After about 5 minutes of debating, I grabbed it and bought it without a fifth thought; now that is home, I'm sort of regretting it, due to the price; but after some internet shopping, I find that I actually got a good deal!
I quickly left before I could be talked into buying any other high priced item. :D Um..yeah talking myself into buying another high priced item.
Our next stop was equally hard to find, as it was set in a strip mall, and didn't have a sign on the road. So I flew on past it, and had to come back. Unfortunately their selection was tiny as well. But the owner gave Wellness a great review as well, say all of his dogs has reached lost weight and were not at a healthy level; and from the looks of them they were!
I browsed around a little and got out WITHOUT buying A THING! Woo!
Once our other errands were finished, I stopped by the park to walk the dogs; and then we headed home. My camera was acting up so you don't get to see the cute pictures of Bubbles and Texas together.
Today I decided to give the 'ol E.B.D bag a test run; I loaded up with my "gear" and Texas and I set off to my neighbors house. (We..I am feeding the cat while they are gone)
Even though It was jam packed, it wasn't overly heavy and I could bend down to deal with Mr. Speedy Gonzales with out it sliding over my head to whack me.
The biggest issue for me was getting into the bag; the flap is right up against your body so you can't open it all the way with out doing some contortions; it would be great if perhaps the flap wasn't there at all!
But anyways. Today on our walk, we worked on loose leash walking, come command, and my "Stay with Me" command for when he is off leash. He picks it up so fast its astounding!!
Ours is a private neighborhood, so I felt comfortable dropping the leash and walking away.
I would make him "sit" (treat) and drop the leash and say "Ok", so that he knows that I don't have the leash anymore.
He took of running happily, until he realized I wasn't at the other end of the leash, then he stopped for a second to look at me, before tearing back to my side.
I of course rewarded him for this behavior and told him "good stay by me"; as I want that too be the key words for him to come back in my area. Midnight was great at this, although I never specifically taught her that's what I meant.
Afterward, I stuck around the house and procrastinated, so I WASN'T able to go to the other two places to check out their food selection; but hopefully tomorrow. (heh.) Texas will be the first to try out the new food, as his bag is the lowest now, and as soon as Bubbles gets finished with this round of IAMS she too will be on the Wellness diet.
I kind of feel silly to be this excited over dog food! But I'm ready for Bubbles to be at LEAST a couple of pounds lighter then what she is, and Texas, not to get there at all!

December 2: Dog Food Research
Now that I am the owner of my first puppy, there are a lot of things I find myself thinking of that I haven't been able to have the option of doing with the PITS. One of those is food choice; With GDF we have been feeding the dogs IAMS but are now allowed to use Purina One;
According to the food lady at one of our local pet stores, those are the two WORST brands on earth! Of course the one she was promoting wasn't much better....but I digress.
CRITERIA #1
Things Your Pet Food Should NOT Contain
1. Chemical Preservatives - BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin
2. Corn - known allergen, poor source of protein, highly indigestible, recent source of fatal fungal infections caused by Diamond Pet Products.
3. Wheat - same as above, Soy - same as above,
4.By-Products - indigestible beaks, feathers, feet, heads, etc. Does not have to contain meat, 5.Animal Fat (non-specific) or Beef Tallow - hard, indigestible fat source,
6.Flour - of any kind, used as a filler,
7.Pentobarbital - from tainted meat sources. Same chemical used in euthanizing animals
CRITERIA #2
Things Your Pet Food SHOULD Contain:
1. Whole Foods - Apples, carrots, spinach, etc.Live Probiotics - micro encapsulated friendly bacteria, supports intestinal health,Chelated Minerals - scientifically proven to be 40% better absorbed
2. Natural Preservative €Å“vitamin E, not just“mixed tocopherols- a source of vitamin E
3. Grape Seed Extract - very potent anitoxidant source
4. Hormone and Steroid Free Meat - Your pet is eating the same food day in and day out. A little exposure every day adds up to a lot!
5. Chicken MEAL - not just chicken. Chicken MEAL is the best cut of the meat
Click Here for more information. Further on down the page it gives the list of dog foods and there ingredients
First up is:
Royal Cain for Dachshunds: Not much impressed, they don't have a puppy food for the dachshund variety. It does have L-Carnitine in it which helps burn fat, so that is a plus for this food. Also not much information about what the food will do for your dog. B-
Life's Abundance: First down factor is the price, a 40lbs bag cost almost $60!!!!!! That price is way out of my range so I'm on the next brand.C
Wellness: I appreciate the sites that are willing to define their ingredients!! They use USDA grade foods that are Fit for Human consumption. They have foods for all steps of life as well.
Their Healthy Weight and Just for Puppy foods are what I'm interested in; A big plus is that their HW food is high in Fiber, which helps the dog feel fuller as well as reduced calorie and fats, Definatly what Bubsy needs;
Just for Puppy food, high amounts of protein and carbohydrates to help that high energy and muscle growth, and Smaller Kibble Size for Smaller Mouths A+
Congrats if you got through all of that!!!!!
So from my search, its seems that for what I'm looking for, Wellness and Blue Buffalo are coming out on top; we'll see what the prices run locally and go from there!
After some research, I have come to this conclusion; The good stuff is EXPENSIVE!!!!
And here a few tips that I found useful in my search.CRITERIA #1

The three that are on the radar screen are: Blue Buffalo, Nutro, , Royal Cain for Dachshunds, Life's Abundance, and Wellness. None of these contain any of the "bad" stuff. So now its research time.
What I personally am looking for is: 1. Price, 2. Ingredients 3. Is it available at a local place

Blue Buffalo: Love the website, almost all its ingredients have links to definition so you know exactly what you are giving your pup. They also offer a coupon for $5 off your first purchase so defiantly a plus in my book! Their food includes: Real Meat, Fruits and Veggies, Cold Formed Nutrients and Antioxidents, NO animal by-products, NO artificial coloring and NO corn, wheat or soy. (don't tell them that corn is a veggie..but once again that is O/T)
I"m checking out the:
