Happy..Birthday?

This post is in honor of Texas's 4th birthday, July 6, 2012 - Yes I realized that its way to far gone to even consider this belated, but you know. First off I can't believe he's FOUR, where has the time gone? I would love to say something like "he keeps life interesting" but I've gotta be honest here, Texas is pretty boring. 95% of his day is spent sleeping, or begging food from me. But I wouldn't trade him for the world. He is a great cuddler (occasionally) a great watch dog (as long as I'm home, otherwise he's pointing out the valuables in attempt to spare himself), a good car rider (as long as we're moving) and loves everybody (as long as they are female and they've met before).

Really though, I love this little guy. :)

Happy Birthday Bubbles!

Bubbles, on my bed looking out of the window
Happy 12th (?) Birth and Gotcha Day!
Ok so we really don't know that its her birthday, but we do know that 9 years ago, today Missy-Moo became our families' first pet. Never did she/we imagine how many dogs she would mentor in the coming years.  At 11, Bubbles in content to sleep the day away in her crate, or the couch.   Her tolerance of the dogs is becoming smaller and smaller, which I figure may be due to fact that they will run over her if she's in the way. So I'm working hard on make sure she doesn't have to deal with them if possible. :)
She still gets around pretty well, and enjoys chasing the occasional squirrel.
Here's to hoping to many more years!

8 year Bubbaversary!

While we don't know Bubbles's exact birth date, we made November 15th the day we celebrate her birthday and "Gotcha" day together. Hard to believe she's been with us for 8 years!! You can read her "Gotcha" story here.  I wish I'd blogged more about her during her "younger" years, but I'm pretty sure she was a bigger version of Texas.
My father was convinced Bubbles was a dumb dog, because we could never get her to do anything, however I changed that fact when i started teaching her some different things.
While she doesn't get the whole "follow the treat" thing, she's learned to:

  • Sitting on all types of flooring. (She used to refuse to sit anywhere but carpet),
  • Eating all of her food from her bowl..(she used to take a mouthful to the living room, and it there)
  • Coming when called
  • Coming when the whistle is blown
  • Kenneling when I point to her crate
  • And leaving the room when I say "out".
Dumb dog? I don't think so.
This year, I've noticed a significant decrease in Bubble's energy, she sleeps all the time, which is nothing new, but she's spending even less time outside...and sometimes she won't even get up off the couch, when we all dash out. She's getting old gracefully.

Happy Birthday Sweet Girl!

Guess whose Birthday......

Pompei turned 1 years old today! Birthday's with guide dog puppies are always bittersweet. We're happy to celebrate one year of life with our crazy puppies, but sad knowing that our time with them is quickly drawing to a close. Pompei is attempting to make sure I'm not too sorry to see him go, as a teenager, he's testing all his boundaries but we're working on keeping him "walking the straight and narrow."

However, we are very eager to see what he'll do once back at the school! I know someone will ask, so let me go ahead and alay your fears. Yes it will be hard to let him go, but remember he was never "mine" in the first place, and as we're going through our year together, we're doing a LOT of training and preparation of the dogs for this next stage. So the thought of keeping them after all.that.work is disappointing. Believe me, finding out your dog has been, as we call it, career changed (taken out of the program) is a little short of devastating...especially if you had high hopes for his future.

That and, we're typically getting a new puppy after the old one goes, which keeps us very.very. busy. Unfortunately this will be the first time, in four years, that I won't be getting another puppy as my old puppy goes back. Some different situations happened  and for now I'm going to wait for Midnight to have puppies, which will be sometime in the spring..if she's pregnant...something we won't know for a little while yet.. So Pompei's turn in will be much harder than my past puppies to be sure.

However, I know my decision was the right one when I stepped outside this morning. O.M.G it was COLD.

Back to Pompei, he got a Deer Antler and a Bone for his birthday, the former of which, Texas promptly stole. Than when he saw Pompei get the bone, he proceeded to stalk him around the house whining.

Aaah Sibling Rivarly.

Whatever will he do without his Big Little Brother?

Happy Birthday Pompei!!!!!

Must allow me too sleep wit you on yur bed...

Oh wait..what is dis? Looks like mom was writing a bloggie and furgot to hide it..hehhehe:

"He guys, today is a very special day for my dog family, as Texas turns two. I tear up when I realize that I get too keep this dog for as long as he is alive, and how special he is too me."
"Yes he is WAY more work than I ever could have dreamed, when I was begging my father to bring him home with me," <Texas: WAIT!!!????ME?? WORK??? FUTURE ADOPTERS IGNORE THAT STATEMENT!!>
"And I probably could never give him away due to his reactivity towards strangers, but that makes me happy, knowing that he is mine, and mine only. Once he gets to know people they can't help but fall in love with his crazy self. My neighbors, who up until this point, have not been dog people, now consider him one of her favorite dogs in my house...well besides Pompei. Anyway Texas you are a very special boy and I hope we have many more years together - Love Mom."
Weelll.....i don't even know what Is supposed to say ta that.....
Oh Look a squirrell!
Caption: Texas's second birthday is a happy one for me, as I've never had a puppy until their second birthday. Texas has been a challenge for sure, and his reactivity towards people, makes it hard for us to have a normal dog-owner relationship. Though if anything it makes us a lot closer. I wouldn't trade him for the world.

Bubbaversary

So we are about two days late on this...

November 15th or 17th 2002 - Bubbles became the 9th member of our family. And since we don't know her exact birth date..or age for that matter, we are celebrating her 10th birthday as well!!

My parents had promised that as soon as we moved in our new home, we could get a dog... an outside dog ( in their minds anyway), because you know things like carpets cannot be ruined by a dog.

A month before our scheduled close/move in date, I don't remember which, we recieved a call from one of our church friends.

Her sister had a dachshund that she was trying to find a home for. Though I had in mind a puppy or a larger breed dog, I was MORE than happy to concede to a smaller breed.

My parents were happy that the dog  was older and already house trained, and we were happy just to have a dog.

Bubbles sitting on the car seat, looking at the camera.

We made at trip to see her, and she came tearing out of the house normal Bubbles style, they said her original name was Duchess, but they started calling her Bubba..which morphed into Bubbles.

Truthfully I can't remember much about the visit except for the woman hit her with a fly swatter. Not cool in our book. But we all decided we wanted her, and a month later we went and picked her up!

Looking back I really feel bad for her, as there was such much we did wrong, but she survived, as any dog does with an uniformed owner! The one good we did do, was socialize!!

She went EVERYWHERE with us, she's traveled to Chicago, Alabama, Tennessee, just to name a few, she was the first in car when we were about to go out, and since most of the time we didn't have time to run her back inside she came with us. (And I stupidly sold her crate...WHAT WAS I THINKING!?!?!?)

She claimed my dad and I as her primary caretakers, and tolerated everyone else.

She loved to "tell off" other dogs, and my dad was convinced that she wouldn't be able to handle another dog in the house, which to him meant, no other dog until Bubbles passes away.

*snicker*

January 2006, I came in contact with my first guide dog puppy; and life the way Bubbles knew it changed forever.

Our first week with Jake and Bubbles was....interesting to say the least. I can remember being in tears over the thought that, GDF might take Jake away due to Bubbles' (what I labled) aggressive behavior.

Turns out Jake was indeed taken due to aggression, but it was him being Mr.Tough Guy, and not Bubbles.

Since then Bubbles has learned to ignore the menagerie of dogs that have come through our house, first day she lets them know not to touch her, and they respect that. Texas was and is the only dog that will get her to play, or even get her excited. They are pretty much inseparable.
Bubbles and Texas sitting in a chair, on top of a spotted blanket and my robe.
Since we've moved to K'ville, Bubbles has really turned into a different dog, while she still sleeps a much as possible, she also loves to hunt for rodents under the lawn mower shed, and will spend HOURS doing that. Which that additional activity along with a healthier diet, has cause her to shed some pounds like nobodies buisness!!
Bubbles in a large dog bed, but laying under a smaller dog bed...yes she's a silly dog
She has more energy, and is still always eager for a car ride. She likes to divide her time between my dog friendly house, and the company of my family in their home up the road. If she can she'll sneak up their for the night, before coming back for breakfast the next morning. Gives her a break from the crazy puppies zoom around my house :))

I think she looks great for a 10-year-old dog, I hope the rest of the her years are as good as the past ones have been!!

Love you Bubs!!!

Happy Birthday Midnight!

Midnight
Another Birthday Shout out to my pup Midnight! Midnight was the 3rd puppy I raised for the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, (Rei was also a guide dog pup, but I forgot to clarify that in my last post).

Midnight was my "heart dog" I loved that dog so much it hurts still actually. She went back to the Foundation on Nov 2008 and was chosen to be a breeder. To my knowledge she is schedule to be bred sometime this or next month.

She had such an awesome temperament that I know she will make a great mom!! I sent a letter to her new family a couple of weeks ago, and hope to hear from them soon!!

Happy 2nd Birthday Midnight!!!

Happy Birthday To Midnight!!!

I year ago today, my baby and her siblings made their first appearance into this world. Little Did she know what she had in store for her. I feel so honored that I got to be the first one to mold her into the dog she is today.

I love this dog so much! She has brought much joy into my life over the last eight months. My father really wanted me to take a break after Rei went back, but I was able to convince him to let me raise again, and BOY am I glad I did!

This time is also a sad time as well, because it means that our In Formal Training Recall date is just a mere two months away! Its going to be so hard to let this dog go...
But in the mean time....HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRL!!
She did get a yummy peanut butter and biscuit cake.....::grins:: She loved it.
