Not a Slacker

This may look like I'm slackin' I realized that..but what your average pet dog doesn't even understand, is the amount of energies needed to do this very harrowing job.I'm also tryin to train Rob to do somethin' useful around (such as going to fetch me more hot dog treats or sometin, and that's a full time job with little pea-sized brain. But I'm an extremely patient dude and will stick with it until he's raedy to do it by himself...or until we've been at it for five minutes.

Whatever comes first.

Sniffin out clues. I smelt a bunny rabbit.

Training Tuesday

April 4-11

Texas

Old Cues:
Sit
Down
High Five
Spin
Roll Over
Done  (Training/playtime over)
Hand Signal is Palms Facing outward and putting everything away.
    New Tricks:
    • Playing Dead: Having a one eyed dog presents some interesting challenges, especially when he knows Roll over (rolling completely over) and wants to do it, every time I try to lure him into the "playing dead" position. I think we may have to scrap this idea at the moment.
    • Retrieving Objects: Dachshund's are NOT retrievers, and since the last time we'd worked on this command, I was marking every-time he touched the object, he thought that was what he was supposed to do. I was able to get him to grab the object with his mouth about 10 times, before we called it quits. Next session we'll work on picking up the object. Update: We did work on him picking it up, but now he'll pick it up and throw it in the air. lol. He is succcch a goof ball.

    Comments:
Its been a while since Texas and I have sat down and worked together and it shows. He's soo excited when he sees me get out the clicker that he goes a little bonkers..aka barking and "throwing" behaviors at me to see if he can get a click. So I started out loading the clicker just to help him settle, and realize yes he was going to get something.

Once he calmed down a little bit, we started working on the duration of our sits and downs, because well, they needed work. For this session five seconds was the max I could get him to chill for, and that's ok. We're rusty.

Being a reactive dog, I want him to learn to relax regardless of where we are, and I want to use it to keep him in position, as his attention span is actually shorter than Robs...though we've been working on this with Rob longer, so yeah duh Erin.

    Rob
    Sit - Verbal only
Up-Sit - verbal and physical cue
    Down - Verbal command only
    Leave it
    Take it
    Out
    Off
    OK
    Forward
    Come
    Comments:
Started to set the timer, for our five minute training session, so I don't wind up pushing him too far. In public, he's doing great. When we enter my classroom on Tuesday and Wednesday's, he immediately assumes the "down" position, and calmly looks up at me or other class mates. This is a huge improvement for him, as getting him so young, I actually had to teach him to relax. Fun fun!

Woohoo! I reached my goal of 60 dogs for my survey! THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE!!

    Notes from Rob

    Hi Guys,
So I came home to mom 'bout, I don't even know, furever ago, and she told me that I get to wear a yellow jacket a be a helper dog and stuff...
Soo yesterday, she went away for a looong time, WITHOUT ME, mind you...which I think is really un-fair since I'm supposed to be a guide dog puppy and go EVERYWHERE with her. But nooo she stuck me in that crate place...with my food so it was alright.

But when she got back, the whole car thing was FULL of fun sounding baggies and stuff and they all smelled so good! I watched her put all the stuff on the table and it took her a really long time too cause she said she's not going to go shopping for another month!!

    Bags of Groceries
Anyway, so, cause I"m a helper dog an everything, I thought I'd just jump in and help her put away some groceries and stuff, cause I mean it was a LOT of stuff!! But when she saw me grabbing something down..TO PUT AWAY.. she didn't like that and TOOK IT AWAY!

So I thoughts to myself, "Rob she didn't want you to put THAT away cause she had a special place for it..why don't you grab sometin else?" So i went around the other side and grabbed something else...cause my legs got stretched out while I was sleeping  the other day, and I can stand up really tall, if  I only use two legs!

Texas can't do that cause he didn't sleep enough when he was little like me.

    Hee.hee..

But then mom didn't like THAT EITHER!? And then put me out on the porch so I couldn't "get into anything else!" I was just tryin to be a helper dog!?

Antiways. I think she saw the error of hers ways cause later she let me play in a "kiddie pool".  'cept there was not kids in it, so that was disappointing cause I like those little peoples. But the water was super fun, it made me really happy so I had to run around in big circles as FASTTT as I could!

But after that I didn't want to get wet no more so I went off to see what Bubble's was doing. She wasn't doin anything fun, so I saw Texas across the yard and decided to sneak up on him. Cept he saw me even though I mAde SURE to sneak up on him, on his bad eye side.

Oh well, I made him run after me for a while, before mom took us inside.

And that's about all I did yesterday. Mom still didn't let me help no more even though I really thought I could help out with making hamburgers! One day I WILL learn to hop those baby-gates.

    I'm just sayin.
